Under My Roof was built from a simple belief: people deserve more than a service — they deserve someone willing to walk beside them.
Our story is rooted in lived experience, family, community, and more than two decades of work supporting individuals and families through some of life’s most difficult transitions.
We understand that stability does not happen overnight. Sometimes people need advocacy. Sometimes they need resources, guidance, patience, or another opportunity. And sometimes they simply need someone who refuses to give up on them.
That belief became the foundation of Under My Roof.
We meet people where they are — not judge them by where they have been.
Take My Hand — You Are Not on This Journey Alone.
Long before Under My Roof became an organization, its mission was being shaped through lived experience.
Founder Nikkie Starling understands what it means to face instability at a young age, to need someone in your corner, and to experience the difference one caring person can make. Those experiences later became part of a career spanning more than two decades in family and community-based support.
Along the way, mentors, families, colleagues, and the people she served reinforced an important lesson: people may forget the program, the paperwork, or the referral — but they remember who showed up for them.
Under My Roof was created to carry that lesson forward.
It is the promise that behind every service is a person. Behind every referral is a story. And behind every door should be an opportunity to feel safe, respected, supported, and welcomed.
This is more than the name of an organization. It is the feeling we want people to have when they come through our door: You are Under My Roof now. You matter here.
Under My Roof represents more than housing. It represents belonging.
It is the feeling of walking into a place where you are welcomed, respected, and treated with dignity. A place where someone knows your name, notices when something is wrong, celebrates your progress, and reminds you that one difficult chapter does not define your entire story.
We want the people we serve to experience the kind of support that feels less like entering a program and more like coming home.
A house provides shelter. A home provides connection, safety, accountability, encouragement, and hope.
That is what we are building.
A place where support feels personal. A place where people can grow. A place that feels a little like Momma’s house.
That’s Under My Roof. ❤️
